Experts believe, light, like food and water, is essential to the overall quality of life. As one-quarter of Australia’s population is predicted to be older than 65 by 2050, greater attention is being given to aged care services.
As we continue to see the effects of an ageing population, more demand is being placed on high-quality aged care. Lighting plays an important role in improving and promoting wellbeing and safety. It can set the mood and dictate how individuals feel within a space.
When caring for the elderly, lighting can be crucial in boosting comfort and reducing stress. In aged care, simple design changes can be implemented to ensure that the lighting strategy promotes both the health and safety of the elderly and wellbeing of staff. Human Centric Lighting (HCL) plays an important role in achieving this. Read more below.
To find out more about the importance of lighting in aged care and how it contributes to better health, safety, and the role it plays in people with dementia, read through the articles below.
Lighting in aged care facilities plays a significant role in supporting health and wellbeing and can be specifically designed to improve the welfare of those living with dementia.
Human Centric Lighting in Aged Care
HCL is a lighting concept that controls the spectral composition and intensity of light to help stimulate the bodies biological clock, otherwise known as our circadian rhythm. This can be achieved by using luminaires with a spectral range from 2700K (warm light) to 6500K (cool light) that can be tuned to mimic the cycle of natural daylight.
Light is crucial for how we feel when we wake up in the morning, to the evening when it’s time to relax and prepare for sleep. By replicating daylight cycles indoors, patients can still experience the visual cues that align them to their biological clocks.
